What is domain mapping?

Hi,
As a part of project, I created a wordpress blog & also purchased a domain from godaddy.com.

While creating the domains, i read some articles recommending that I map my wordpress site to my godaddy domain.

Please let me know how to do this since I tried doing it a couple of times myself but not sure how to go ahead.
